The beginning of the age of Murinae (Mammalia: Rodentia) in southern France

Abstract:

We describe the Murinae found in the localities of Lo Fournas 6 and 7 in southern France. The material includes two new species: Progonomys castilloae sp. nov. and Parapodemus pasquierae sp. nov. We discuss the diagnoses of the genera Progonomys and Huerzelerimys. Progonomys is geologically the oldest Murinae found in southwestern Europe, but members of the genera Occitanomys, Huerzelerimys and Parapodemus are found in levels older than previously believed. A diversified fauna of Murinae rapidly appears at the beginning of the Late Miocene.
