Abstract:
The history of the Cranefly Recording Scheme covering Great Britain and Ireland is reviewed, a period of over 20 years since inception. The scheme has acted as a catalyst in the study of craneflies and other Diptera, including the participation of many amateurs. The British list has grown and knowledge of the distribution and ecology of species increased substantially. The application of the scheme to conservation objectives is discussed.
