Muscle insertions do not incur mechanical advantage

  • Carl GANS

Abstract:

In any particular array of an equivalently contracting muscle, each, sarcomere makes an equivalent contribution to the moment generated. This suggests that the concept of mechanical advantage is inappropriate for analysis of muscle attachment patterns. The differences of insertion along lever arms are due to other factors. Mechanical advantage does remain an important topic in analyses of outward forces directed by skeletal elements against the next component in a chain or against portions of the external environment.
