Abstract:

In the Carpathian Uplands and West Beskids hibernating larvae of Salamandra salamandra were found in six water reservoirs (wells, springs, a pool), of which none was in the nature of a mountain brook. These larvae led active ways of living in winter as shown by analyses of their stomach contents. The larvae that survived the winter underwent a metamorphosis in the spring (in April) of the next year.
