Evolutionary Trends in the Dentition of Lagomorpha

  • Lucjan SYCH

Abstract:

General developmental tendencies in cheek teeth from the upper Eocene to the Pliocene are briefly reviewed and discussed. An interpretation of changes in morphology of enamel folds, cusps and roots is made in terms of the theory of morphogenetic fields and gradients. The teeth are treated as having their own serial homology and variation. Three basic gradients responsible for the evolution of cheek teeth are distinguished.
