Abstract:
Fossil remains of bats discovered in two caves in Central Cuba are described. Only cavernicolous bats were represented. Three layers were recognized in the deposits, from which the remains of 15 species of bats (genera Pteronotus, Mormoops, Macrotus, Monophyllus, Brachyphylla, Phyllonycteris, and Natulus) were recovered. Two of these (Pteronotus pristinus and Mormoops magna) are described as new, and a third one (Mormoops megalophylla) is recorded for the first time from the Antillean region. Chronoclinal variation consisting in an increase in size is demonstrated for 9 of the 13 species represented by adequate samples.
