On the phylogeny and classification of the scale insects (Homoptera, Coccinea) (discussion based on the morphology of the mouthparts)

  • Jan KOTEJA

Abstract:

The phylogeny and classification of the scale insects are discussed on the basis of the morphology of the mouth-parts (clypeolabral shield, sucking pump, labium). Four categories higher than the family have been recognized — subordo, superfamily, section and family group. The scale insects are considered as a monophyletic group — subordo Coccinea, which presumably evolved into two major branches — the superfamilies Orthezioidea and Coccoidea.
